The Clava Cairns and After: Coming to Terms with the Earlier Prehistory of Highland Scotland
Talk by Richard Bradley, Emeritus Professor, University of Reading.

Professor Bradley has done important fieldwork in the Highlands over the years and will talk about his work on Clava Cairns, recumbent stone circles, henges, rock art, metalwork hoards and dune settlements over the last 25 years.

Workshop Afternoon at Highland Council
An afternoon of hands-on workshops on a variety of topics, held at Highland Council headquarters, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness (entrance by the Knocknagael Stone). Reconstruction Drawing (2-3:30pm, repeated 3:30-5pm)
Workshop with archaeologist and illustrator Cathy Dagg. Learn a few cheats and have a go at reconstructing life back in the day (of your choice). No great artistic skills required.
Lithic Lab: Taking a Closer Look (2-3:30pm, repeated 3:30-5pm)
Peter Bye-Jensen will introduce and demonstrate the method of use-wear analysis of flint tools where it is possible to explain the function of a stone tool. Lithic Lab will also show how to distinguish between human made flint tools and natural flint.
Aerial Photography (2-3:30pm repeated 3:30-5pm)
Allan Kilpatrick of Historic Environment Scotland provides a hands-on workshop on how to use aerial photos to investigate the archaeological landscape.
Introduction to Using the HER (2-3:30pm)
Learn how to explore and contribute information to the Council’s database of all known heritage with the Highland Council’s HER officer Ian Scrivener-Lindley.
On-line Historic Maps (3:30-5pm) Susan Kruse (ARCH) will lead this taster session on exploring old maps on the National Library of Scotland website.
Technology for Archaeology Drop-in Session ((2-3:30pm repeated 3:30-5pm)
Cathy MacIver of AOC will provide a taster of different software for mapping, recording, analysing and presenting data. Come with your technical questions, and Cathy will troubleshoot for you.
A Beginner's Guide to Identifying Pottery from Fieldwalking and Excavations (2-5pm)
Eric Grant will start with an illustrated account of British ceramics from perhistory to the 19th century followed by a hands-on session identifying a wide range of sherds.
